All systems go for Murcia Senior Men's

Open week at Hacienda del Alamo

By KEITH HOWIE
Following last year’s highly successful inaugural Murcia Seniors Open Week at the five-star Spanish golf resort of Hacienda del Alamo, it is all systems go for this year's programme, to be staged from October 18 to 25.
Scottish Seniors Golfing Society captain Gordon MacDonald has had recent meetings with Hacienda del Alamo Director of Golf Billy Sim to produce a package which at least matches the terms offered last year.
Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County) expects to defend his singles title and also the doubles with partner George Rodaks (Moffat). Many of the other top names in Scottish seniors golf have already committed, determined to wrest the trophies away from the Doonhamer.
Entry priority will be given to SSGS members but we have arranged to increase the field of players to 90. We are therefore able to take enquiries from non-members with handicaps of 12.4 and below on the understanding that they may have to give way to existing members.
Initial reservations should be by email to Gordon MacDonald gordon@corriemar.demon.co.uk
After the 2008 event we surveyed the members who were there. Suggestions coming out of the survey have been reviewed and implemented where appropriate.
You can download an entry form/flier here or from the SSGS website www.scottishseniorsgolf.com and send with your deposit to the address shown.
Entries close on June 30, after which any numbers shortfall will be supplemented by Spanish members.

Late drama at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort

Ian Brotherston overtakes Ian
Hutcheon to win Murcia Seniors

Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & Co) completed a double whammy at the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's Spanish Festival at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort, Murcia by winning the the Murcia Seniors Open today.
Brotherston, winner of the Festival's curtain-raising pairs competition with George Rodaks (Moffat), overtook former Walker Cup player Ian Hutcheon (Monfieth) over the inward half in the third round to win by one shot with a total of four-over-par 220 over the testing Dave Thomas-designed course.
Brotherston had lost his overnight lead by taking 39 shots to the turn, five more than Hutcheon.
Brotherston's rounds were 74, 73 and 73, Hutcheon posting 77, 72 and 72 for 221. Jim Kinloch, the SSGS's joint secretary & treasurer, finished third on 222 with scores of 74, 75 and 73, one shot ahead of Aberdeen's George Paterson (Northern) and two ahead of joint fifth placed Bob Stewart (Tulliallan), the Scottish seniors champion, and Gordon MacDonald, captain of the senior society and a former Scottish and Spanish seniors title-winner.
Kinloch, playing off two of a handicap, had the lowest net total of 216 for the three-round tournament. Runner-up was David Doodson (Temple) with a net 217 off five of a handicap.
Two sets of twins took part in the inaugural Scottish-organised over-50s week - Jim and Peter Kinloch from the Cardross club, and Ian and Fred Hutcheon from Monifieth.

ON-THE-SPOT REPORT FROM KEITH HOWIE
Much excitement here at Hacienda del Alamo in the climax of our first seniors' festival.
Overnight leader Ian Brotherston lost all of his advantage in an outward half of 39. Ian Hutcheon's 34 to the turn took him into the sole lead. However, Ian Brotherston's 3-3-3 start back put him within striking distance.
It was pretty well nip and tuck until the last. Hutch's birdie putt from eight feet on the 18th green slipped past, leaving Ian Brotherston the luxury of two putts from four feet for victory. This was just as well as the putt was from a very tricky spot.
SSGS joint secretary & treasurer Jim Kinloch finished in a strong third place with Northern's George Paterson completing a solid week in fourth place on 223, jut in front of Gordon MacDonald and Scottish champion Bob Stewart.

Hacienda del Alamo pack
of four have sights set on
leader Ian Brotherston

The stage is set for an exciting last day's play under some glorious Costa Calida sunshine for the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's Spanish Festival's Murcia Seniors Open.
Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & Co) shot a one-over-par 73 over the Dave Thomas-designed championship course at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort today which left the door open for the over-50s "big guns" to get him in their sights in the third and final round.
Brotherston's 36-hole tally of 147 is only two shots clear of a chasing pack of four - Aberdeen's George Paterson from Northern, Monifieth's former Walker Cup player and past Scottish champion Ian Hutcheon, Ian Taylor (Royal Burgess) and Jim Kinloch (Cardross).
a 71 by George Paterson (pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency) was the first sub-par score of the tournament and Hutcheon and Taylor both improved by five shots with par-matching scores.
Jim Kinloch, the overnight joint leader with Brotherston, slipped back with a 75 for 149 but he is still 12 shots ahead of twin brother Peter (Ian Hutcheon is 10 shots ahead of his twin brother Fred).
John Lang (Bruntsfield Links), who plays off five, is leading the handicap race with a net two-round total of 144 - one shot ahead of two-handicappers Jim Kinloch and Ian Taylor.

REPORT BY KEITH HOWIE (SSGS vice-captain)

Another glorious Costa Calida day as the big guns began to mount their challenges for the Murcia Seniors Open title.
The par-3 eighth hole is one of the defining factors with many of the contenders. A tough, front- left pin position meant that anyone going past the pin was staring at a double bogey at best, including this writer who suffered his third in a row. Eight was the highest score at that hole but the victim wishes to remain anonymous.
Brilliant golf course here at Hacienda del Alamo.
Top match in final round will see Hutch, Brotherston and Paterson tee off together.

seniors' Spanish Festival

Cardoss's Jim Kinloch, one of two sets of twins playing in the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's inaugural Spanish Festival at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort, Murcia, shared the lead on two-over-par 74 with Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & County) at the end of the first round of the Murcia Seniors Open today.

Monifieth's golfing Hutcheon twins - Ian and Fred - are teaming up to play in the "doubles" competition which is the opening event of the Scottish Seniors Golfing Society's Spanish Festival at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort, Murcia next week.
That's Ian, by the way, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, standing outside Monifieth Golf Club.

Press Release from SSGS

Scottish Seniors Golfing Society/Hacienda del Alamo
Senior Men's Amateur
Festival of Golf
NOVEMBER 2 to 9, 2008

An exciting new prospect for Society members, families and friends.
We have been invited by Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort in Murcia, Spain to stage a week-long tournament at their brilliant facility to mirror the format at the Spanish Seniors Open.
An extremely economical package has been negotiated. We shall take entries on a first come, first served basis up to a maximum 120.
Members may invite up to two non-member friends, provided they are within the handicap limit of 12.4. A deposit of £75 per player will be required by 31st July in order to secure the bookings. Cheques payable to Scottish Seniors Golfing Society.
See http://www.hdagolf.com/ for full details of the resort.
The course is described by SSGS captain Gordon MacDonald as “Fantastic, the best I have played on mainland Spain” and he tends to be a bit fussy about where he plays!
Peter Alliss describes it as "The New No 1 in Spain."
The package
You need to find your own way to either Murcia or Alicante by air. Murcia Airport is no more than 30 min away from the resort; Alicante is nearer 90min.
Hacienda del Alamo can organise transfers to the resort where you will be shown to your pre-selected villa accommodation. There will be a welcome reception on the Sunday evening.
The programme lasts from Sunday to Sunday although there is a day rate quotation for those wishing to extend their trip.

These prices are in Euros

These rates are cut extremely fine but Hacienda del Alamo has agreed that the Society should benefit from the event and agreed a rebate of Euros 30 per player from the golf fees. This was negotiated on the basis that there would be a good uptake of buggies, trolleys and practice balls. The resulting funds will be used in future projects for the benefit of all members.
Women's Festival a success
The idea for the new event came from Colin Farquharson (http://www.scottishgolfview.com/ & www.kirkwoodgolf.co.uk) and the Society’s intrepid official reporter. Colin ran a very successful Women's Winter Festival event along similar lines at the Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort a couple of weeks ago and saw the possibilities for all kinds of Golf Festivals - including a Seniors Festival.
